Both radio and flight training took place at the Ballarat Aerodrome during the Second World War and the site retained its status as a Radio School up until 1961. At this point it was agreed that the Shire of Ballarat would become the civil operator of the airport, and this negotiation secured the future of the aerodrome up to the present day.
2006 saw Ballarat Airport recommended for listing on the Victorian Heritage Register thanks to its part in the Empire Air Training Scheme and this recommendation became reality in July 2007. Since then the aerodrome has remained at the forefront of local emergency services operations as well as flight training and accommodation for community organisations.
Ballarat is not currently served by commercial passenger airlines. Instead, a shuttle bus service is provided from the nearby Melbourne airport which is served by airlines including:
- Qantas
- Air China
- Singapore Airlines
- United Airlines
- Vietnam Airlines
- Virgin Australia
