By Kieron Thwaites
La Mercy Airport also known as King Shaka International Airport is an important airport serving Durban, South Africa. It is located approximately 35 km north of the city centre of Durban in La Mercy, KwaZulu-Natal. La Mercy Airport was built mainly to boost the area's international services but it also plays a vital role in domestic services throughout South Africa.

It opened its doors to passengers on 1 May 2010 and has become an important gateway for both domestic and international services. It was also the 9th busiest airport in Africa, according to 2010 statistics. Durban International Airport lost almost all of its international traffic due to short runway and the hub and spoke policy. As a result, it was replaced by La Mercy Airport. La Mercy Airport’s runway length and terminal are designed to handle large aircraft such as the Airbus A380.

Currently, the largest aircraft that has scheduled services from La Mercy Airport is Boeing 777-300ER with Emirates operating from Dubai to Durban. In La Mercy Airport, passenger terminal is located at the southern end of the airport and has two levels. Usually, departures are handled on the upper floor, while arrivals are handled on the lower floor. Passenger terminal are constructed with advanced design concepts to make passenger movement smooth and comfortable from arrival to departure. Its cargo terminal is located to the north of the passenger terminal.

La Mercy Airport is a part of Dube Tradeport, a 36-hectare trade zone linking airport’s cargo terminals and other facilities such as transit accommodation for tourists, offices, IT platform and an integrated agricultural export zone. It has all the world class facilities including restaurants, shops, bank and post office. It also has 16 air bridges, 52 retail outlets, 4, 500 vehicle parking bays, 34 aircraft parking bays and 18 self-service kiosks.

In 2011-2012, La Mercy Airport recorded 5.04 million passengers in which 201,037 were international passengers and remaining 4.83 million were domestic passengers. It has the capacity to handle 7.5-million passengers annually. La Mercy Airport also has a bird radar system that detects the movements of the birds near the runway and prevents potentially hazardous situations.
