Well-Fed and Ready to Fly

Packs of cold, anaemic sushi, $9 ham sandwiches and indeterminable slop sweating away in bain-maries – when it comes to food choices, airports have for too long held a reputation as the only places where a combo meal from a fast-food chain seems like the most palatable and sensible option.
Thankfully for travelers though, many airports are (finally) embracing the idea that a holiday should begin from the moment you check-in and, as such, are offering world-class food options that incorporate quality ingredients, local traditions and unique ideas.
Travel website, Frommers, recently compiled a list of the top 10 Airport restaurants in the U.S. While no means comprehensive, the list provides a good cross-state sample of what’s available - from Southern classics and old-fashioned burger’n’shake combos to ocean-fresh seafood and dangerously moreish Tex-Mex.
With airport eateries continuing to up their game, hopefully we will see more of these ‘best of’ lists cropping up (I’d personally love what the U.S airports’ European counterparts have to offer!) but, in the meantime, here are America’s top 10 spots for pre-flight fare.

In no particular order:
Atlanta (ATL): One Flew South is located in Terminal E and offers Southern comfort favourites with an Asian twist – think clam and miso chowder or lamb sausage with soybean succotash. Billing itself as “the first upscale dining experience at the world’s busiest airport”, One Flew South also has a well-stocked sushi and sake bar and an extensive list of both modern and classic cocktails.

Chicago (ORD): Celebrity chef, Rick Bayless (a favourite of President Obama) is the man behind Tortas Frontera in O'Hare's Terminal 1. Modelled on his popular Chicago eatery, Xoco, Tortas Frontera is Mexican at its messiest and most fun - the freshest of bread is piled with beef, pulled-pork, chorizo, guacamole, and mouth-watering ingredients to create some of the best sandwiches you’ll ever taste.

New York (JFK): Those after something light and refreshing pre-flight should make time for a meal at Deep Blue Sushi. A sister outlet to Manhattan’s high-end Buddakan restaurant, Deep Blue Sushi prides itself on the freshest sushi rolls, plates of jewel-like sashimi and hot meat, fish and tempura dishes.

Baltimore (BWI): Obrycki is a 60-year-old Baltimore crab house that’s crab-cake sliders are the stuff of local legend. Tucked next to Gate B11, this outpost of the original is a low-key joint with a menu full of rib-sticking fare and, not surprisingly, more than a few crab dishes.

Raleigh, NC (RDU): Make sure your napkin is fastened securely at 42nd Street Oyster Bar , where you'll unleash your inner child through big, messy seafood dishes – think jumbo shrimp still in their bright orange shell, home-style grits and briny, un-rinsed oysters. Get stuck in.

Boston (BOS): Another seafood spot, Legal Seafoods is part of an international empire that was born in Boston. Frommers describes Legal as having “an international reputation for serving only the freshest, best-quality fish, and shellfish, which it processes at its own state-of-the-art plant … and it's all splendid." There's three different Legal restaurants on offer in the airport - Legal's Test Kitchen (shortened menu, fast delivery), Legal C Bar (lots of beer options along with the usual menu) and the traditional, full-menu restaurant.

Los Angeles (LAX): Described by Frommers as "a 1960s Star Trek set gone Technicolor," Encounter at LAX is a favourite of the cool-set and kids alike. Housed in the famous spaceship building at Los Angeles International Airport, the restaurant presents American classics in an artful, slightly wacky way. All blue neon and lava lamps, this place is worth a stop-in, even if it’s just for a cocktail.

New York (LGA): When the proprietor is one of NYC’s best wholesale meat purveyors, you KNOW you’re going to be getting some damn tasty burgers. Pat LaFrieda’s Custom Burgers make an artform of beef patties – offering burgers so finger-licking tasty that they have become a tourist attraction in themselves. Choose from the menu or customise your burger from the large array of fresh ingredients, add a side of fried pickles and wash it all down with milkshakes from the local Ronnybrook dairy.

Seattle (SEA): A branch of one of the most celebrated restaurants in Seattle, Ivar's is a seafood-lovers dream, with fish and chips, scallops and chips, clam and chips, and chowder all being menu favourites. The restaurant stakes its reputation on using “only wild Alaskan deep water halibut, salmon, and Pacific True cod”.

Minneapolis (MSP): Ike's Food and Cocktails is a fine-dining steakhouse located just before security in the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. If you’re after some hearty, home-style fare then you can’t go past Ike’s for steaks, turkey dinners, pot roast and burgers. Ike’s also offers $10 cocktails that can be enjoyed at their old-school-style bar.

If you find yourself departing from one of airports listed above then be sure to give these eateries your own review. If you're arriving, on the other hand, arrange your car hire through the following:

The Carousel Blues

Here’s a not so fun fact – did you know that every hour around 3000 items of luggage are lost by the world’s combined airline companies? That’s 3000 items, 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.

With most international airports continuing to advance in leaps and bounds when it comes to technology and general efficiency-enhancement, you’d think that instances of lost luggage would be rare in 2011 – dwindled down until they’re but an urban legend that’s oft retold but never actually experienced (“well, one of my cousin’s friends once……”). Yet, every new day brings thousands of fresh tales of hearts sinking by the carousel, hours passing in baggage reclaim and entire holidays spent in one pair of shorts and a rotation of souvenir t-shirts.

In order to save you the hassle and heartache, we’ve compiled a list of preventative measures, as well as tips for the unlucky souls who find their meticulously-packed bags lost or delayed.

Make your mark: Use secure luggage tags to record your name and details such as phone number, email and physical address. If you really like erring on the side of caution then feel free to also scrawl this information all over the luggage itself.

Get loud: It may not be as stylish but brightly coloured or patterned luggage is much easier to identify than plain old black. Learn to love leopard print.

Take some holiday snaps: Of your bag, that is. May seem OTT but having a photo of your belongings or at least a note of its size, colour, brand etc will be helpful if you find yourself having to explain it while you’re tired, stressed out and suddenly desperate for a strong drink.

A stitch in time....: Windows shut? Check. Appliances off? Check. Passport? Check. Ticket? Check. Selection of impractical shoes that you know you shouldn’t even be bringing? Check. That period of time just prior to leaving home for the airport always takes a bit longer than anticipated but (if you ever want to see those shoes again) it’s important to not leave check-in until the last minute. Almost-missing-the-flight check-ins are more likely to result in actually-missing-the-flight luggage.

Don't linger a little longer: Once you get off the plane head directly to the luggage carousel – do not pass go. Nothing in arrivals is that exciting and you don’t need to use the bathroom that badly. Just think that, while you’re taking your sweet time, some random could already be walking off with your belongings.

Don’t be shy:
As soon as you realise that any of your luggage is damaged or missing go to your airline's lost luggage counter. Although you’ll probably be feeling/upset/murderous it’s important to stay calm – polite but assertive is much more effective than screaming and swearing, particularly when it comes to jaded airline staff.

Track, trace and wait: The first course of action airline staff will take is to try and track your luggage using your baggage identification stub (this is that little printed tag you’ve no doubt already thrown away. Yeah, do not throw this away). Failing that you’ll be asked to fill out a form. Again, do not throw this out – if it turns out your bag has disappeared into the ether you will be wanting this. In good news: most lost bags turn up within 48 hours and are delivered to your home or hotel. In bad news: if your bag still hasn’t turned up after several days then it’s probably not going to. In this case you’ll need to contact the airline to start the lost baggage claim process.

Money, money, money: In most cases you will be entitled to compensation from the airline if your bag is damaged, delayed or lost. An airline's liability limit varies according to two international treaties - the Montreal and Warsaw Conventions – but generally the limit is around USD1500 (cold comfort if you’re a fan of designer clothing/expensive gadgets). Check your carrier's website for specifics and, should you need compensation, be specific and thorough when listing missing items.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing: If you’ve already lost your luggage then this piece of advice won’t help you, however, for future reference, hold onto your receipts (for clothing, cameras, electronics etc) as most airlines will ask for receipts for each item of lost luggage.

Make yourself known: Here’s the thing - airlines generally don’t enjoy giving away money and thus will often be less than helpful in your quest for compensation. This is the kind of situation that a certain phrase involving a “dog” and a “bone” was coined for. Call, often. Write emails, write letters and demand answers......do this to the point where the airline staff recognise your voice, can type your email address from memory and are familiar with your lunch choices, work woes and the achievements of your children.

Or you could just take everything carry-on.

The biggest culprit for lost luggage is none other than Heathrow
Airport. Now that you know how to come out unscathed, get onto Heathrow Airport car rental here.

Stansted Airport Gets a Dose of Bad Medicine

We’re sure that there are plenty of good jokes to be gleaned from this one so we’ll just give you the story and let you take it from there.

UK Border Security has revealed that a cache of 50,000 fake Viagra tablets was seized at Stansted Airport.
The discovery was made in October of last year and the little blue pills have since been destroyed. The haul was said to be worth about £25,000 on the black market and Brodie Clark, Head of Border Force for the UK Border Agency, was quick to remind the public that counterfeit medicines are a serious concern to customs and the UK in general:
“As well as stopping drugs, weapons and illegal immigrants from reaching the UK, our officers have a vital role to play in protecting British consumers and businesses from the trade in black market medicines and other goods.
Smugglers are only out to make a profit – these goods are often dangerous and the proceeds can be used to fuel serious organised crime."
This particular hoard is one of many that contributed to the £13 million worth of fake Viagra that was seized by UK Border Security in 2010. The largest single discovery was made in freight deliveries at Heathrow airport, where around six million pills were intercepted.

If you're going to be traveling to Stansted Airport (with only the most legal of reasons, of course) then prebook your Stansted Airport rental car here.
