Unusual Airports Around the World

Here are some of the stranger airport runways around the world: Gibraltar Airport (IATA: GIB) is very unusual -- only 500 metres away from the centre of town, the runway intersects with a major highway. When a plane has to take off or land, traffic is shut down. Similarly, the runaway at Zadar airport in Croatia (IATA: ZAD) intersects the local road from Zadar to Zemunik.

Scotland's Barra airport (IATA: BRR) is located towards the at the north tip of the island of Barra in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. The airport is right on the beach and the tide often comes in over the runways, resulting in the odd stranded dolphin or other marine life, which then needs to be rescued by firemen. It's popular with cockle pickers too -- they're advised to keep an eye on the wind sock to see if the airport is operating.

Saba Island is the smallest island in the Netherlands Antilles. Local authorities decided to built a landing strip there to encourage the tourist trade -- but the runway is only 400 metres long and it ends with steep cliffs on both sides.

Fans of the movie 'Lost Horizon' won't be surprised to hear that the world’s most challenging runway approach is in Tibet. Nyingchi airport (IATA: LZY) is located in Tibet, 2,954 metres above sea level. This is not as high as the other two civil airports in Lhasa and Qamdo, but it is considered to be the one of the trickiest approaches in the world. It's surrounded by high mountains and often enveloped in cloud. Airplanes have to fly through the narrow valley with the narrowest flight path less than four kilometres from one mountain ridge to the opposite one.

Of course there are plenty of tricky approaches -- Queenstown Airport in New Zealand (IATA: ZQN) is noted for being surrounded on all side mountainous terrain. But the runway that takes the cake is the Princess Julianna International Airport (IATA: SXM), which serves the Dutch part of the island of St Maarten. Right next to the beach, it makes sunbathers run for cover and is responsible for some of the highest viewed clips on YouTube. Check out the sandblasting below...
