Unusual Airports Around the World

Here are some of the stranger airport runways around the world: Gibraltar Airport (IATA: GIB) is very unusual -- only 500 metres away from the centre of town, the runway intersects with a major highway. When a plane has to take off or land, traffic is shut down. Similarly, the runaway at Zadar airport in Croatia (IATA: ZAD) intersects the local road from Zadar to Zemunik.

Scotland's Barra airport (IATA: BRR) is located towards the at the north tip of the island of Barra in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. The airport is right on the beach and the tide often comes in over the runways, resulting in the odd stranded dolphin or other marine life, which then needs to be rescued by firemen. It's popular with cockle pickers too -- they're advised to keep an eye on the wind sock to see if the airport is operating.

Saba Island is the smallest island in the Netherlands Antilles. Local authorities decided to built a landing strip there to encourage the tourist trade -- but the runway is only 400 metres long and it ends with steep cliffs on both sides.

Fans of the movie 'Lost Horizon' won't be surprised to hear that the world’s most challenging runway approach is in Tibet. Nyingchi airport (IATA: LZY) is located in Tibet, 2,954 metres above sea level. This is not as high as the other two civil airports in Lhasa and Qamdo, but it is considered to be the one of the trickiest approaches in the world. It's surrounded by high mountains and often enveloped in cloud. Airplanes have to fly through the narrow valley with the narrowest flight path less than four kilometres from one mountain ridge to the opposite one.

Of course there are plenty of tricky approaches -- Queenstown Airport in New Zealand (IATA: ZQN) is noted for being surrounded on all side mountainous terrain. But the runway that takes the cake is the Princess Julianna International Airport (IATA: SXM), which serves the Dutch part of the island of St Maarten. Right next to the beach, it makes sunbathers run for cover and is responsible for some of the highest viewed clips on YouTube. Check out the sandblasting below...

Within a few years it had four runways and was the largest airport in the world. Its official name until 1941 was Newfoundland Airport.

The airport grew in importance through the early decades of the jet age in the 1950s-1970s with its importance being amplified by being situated almost precisely on the great circle route between the major cities of the U.S. East Coast and London.

The airfield's location was sufficiently close to Europe to allow the piston-engined planes of the 1940s to make a non-refueled transatlantic flight and the same qualities made it ideal for the fuel-inefficient jet aircraft of the post-war decades.

Here's some information on Buffalo Niagara International Airport, sourced from Wikipedia:

The airport serves Buffalo, New York as well as Southwest Ontario Canada (Private land shuttle services make connections between Buffalo with Toronto Pearson International Airport in Mississauga, Ontario and John C. Munro International Airport in Hamilton, Ontario). It is the busiest airport in Upstate New York, and the third busiest in New York State by number of boardings.

The Buffalo Municipal Airport (as it was then called) was built in 1926. However, the airport, which officially opened on May 11, 1939, was quickly outgrown, due to larger planes coming on the scene. A 1955 expansion helped remedy this problem. In 1959, after being acquired by the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA), the name was changed to the Greater Buffalo International Airport.
