The first airport in 1925 "Kern County Airport No. 1" was developed under auspices of the Kern County Chamber of Commerce near Highway 99, about a mile west of the present site of Meadows Field. The name of Kern County Airport No. 1 was changed to Meadows Field in memory of Cecil Meadows, a World War II pilot who visioned the airport.

In 1957, A terminal building was opened. Throughout the years, the terminal would have airlines come and go. In February 2006, The terminal was replaced by the "William M. Thomas" Terminal. The airport includes jet bridges, an indoor luggage carousel, restaurant, etc. The former terminal was transformed into an international terminal with a newly constructed customs facility adjacent to it.

The economic crisis of 2008 resulted in fewer commercial flights to and from Meadows Field. Continental Express discontinued Houston service Delta Connection stopped Salt Lake City flights, ExpressJet Airlines ended service to Sacramento and San Diego, and Mexicana Airlines ended service to Guadalajara.
