Cairns Airport (IATA code CNS) is an Australian domestic and international airport in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. Formerly operated by the Cairns Port Authority, the airport was sold by the Queensland Government in December 2008 to a private consortium. It is the seventh busiest airport in Australia. The airport is located 7 kilometres (4 miles) north of the Cairns central business district in the suburb of Aeroglen.

Cairns airport leads the regional airports in Australia in terms of passenger numbers.  Cairns airport is popular with the tourists as it is the gateway to many tropical destinations in the surrounding area.  As a result  of the large increase in passenger numbers, the airport had a renovation and redevelopment in 2010.

The international terminal has an array of dining and shopping options to entertain and feed you while you wait for a flight.  From a burger bar to a cafe, Australian souvenirs and quality products - such as merino and sheepskins- to duty free shops and an art gallery, you will be well looked after.

The domestic terminal has a few more eateries, with the likes of more Australian Hungry Jacks and Coffee club as well as souvenir shops, Bars and a surf shop for those last minute beach purchases.  you can't stay in Cairns without some bathers.

During World War II the Australian Government bought the airport for use by the Royal Australian Air Force. The main runway was hard surfaced and made longer for the RAAF aircraft. It was also used by the American Air Force as a transport base, with the 33d Troop Carrier Squadron (374th Troop Carrier Group) operating from the base during 1942.
