Below is some information on Liverpool Airport, sourced from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liverpool_Airport).

Liverpool John Lennon Airport (IATA code LPL) serves the city of Liverpool and North West England. Until 2007 it was one of Europe's fastest growing airports, with annual passenger numbers increasing from 875,000 in 1998 to 5.47 million. 500,000 passengers were handled in one month, for the first time, during May 2007.

During World War II, the airport was taken over by the Royal Air Force and was known as RAF Speke. Bombers were built there, including Bristol Blenheims and Handley page Halifaxes - and the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation assembled many planes, including Hudsons and Mustangs, shipped from the USA to the Liverpool docks.

The original terminal building dating from the late 1930s, famously seen on early television footage with its terraces packed with Beatles fans, was left derelict for over a decade after being replaced in 1986. It has recently been renovated and renamed the Crowne Plaza Liverpool John Lennon Airport Hotel, preserving its Art Deco style.

In 2002 the airport was renamed in honour of John Lennon. A seven foot (2.1 metre) tall bronze statue of Lennon stands overlooking the check-in hall. On the roof is painted the airport's motto, "Above us, only sky", a line from Lennon's song "Imagine".
